Some Thoughts on The '60's & '70's

I recently traded several emails with Rick Latham - a damn good drummer in the studio and on stage. My very close friend Lindy is also one of the best drummers I have ever heard. Trading emails with Rick got me to thinking about Musicians and "Manufactured Musicians" (cough, cough). For those of us who were raised in 60's and '70's, we may recall how bands got a recording contract - they earned it. Now-a-days, we see a lot of "boy bands" singing to pre-recorded music. We also see a lot of "pop tarts" doing the same. These "bands" are manufactured by recording company marketing machines.

I was in a band in the '70's and we worked hard and we earned every penny we got.We did get radio airtime and played several venues. But in the short time that the band was together, the recording contract eluded us. But to be quite honest, I don't seriously believe we were ready for a recording contract - we hadn't earned it.

This is why you won't see artificial "boy bands", "pop tarts", or rappers on this blog. I just can't take them seriously (not to mention I don't care for their music). What I like to see are bands with musicians playing instruments when they perform. I leave the rest to my children.
